A VOICE THAT HAUNTS ME

AMBRE CIEL - STILL, THERE IS THE SEA | REVIEW

Reviewed by: | Posted on: | Category:

Ambre Ciel hails from Canada and this is her debut album from Gondwana Records. The album consists of 8 songs making this a brisk listen.

LETS LISTEN

1. The Sun, the Sky
The first song on the album, I have to say, is a masterpiece. I got goosebumps listening to this. I cannot believe how good her vocals are! That in combination with her dream like piano playing and the swelling orchestra made me sink deep into my couch as I locked in to the music.
2. EAU MIROIR
The second song is also really good, not as good as the previous but idk man, its gonna be really tough topping that opening song, sheesh! This song has a really nice horn section in the background along with with some bells that carry the main theme here.
3. CYCLE
this song is instrumental and as the album goes on you will notice there is a good bit of that. This is a really nice piece here.
4. ATLANTIS
This song slows down a little bit with some repetitious piano progressions and features an interesting almost scifi swells in the background. It's a really pretty song but is also my least favorite on the album.
5. DREAM / MIRAGE
This...song...is incredible. There really isn't much for vocals here as they fade out and the orchestra takes over. This song is really captivating though, the recording is SO GOOD!
6. SOMETIMES
I am going to say this again, I CAN'T BELIEVE HOW GOOD HER VOICE IS. You really could just get rid of the music and just have those vocals and I would listen to this all day. There are some really awesome serenity bells in this song that are deep and beautiful sounding. A wood flute flutters in the background as well that sounds excellent, so good! The last minute ends with some rain and those same bells ringing out, I love a little artsy ambience and I am here for it.
7. PIECE NO. 8
Good piano piece here, repetetive keys kind of reminded me of something Phillip Glass would write. No vocals here which is unfortunate as I need MORE!
8. FRAGMENT OF
Another instrumental piece which is ok, but if I am being honest I would have really loved some more vocals, ugh! She ties in the first songs melody in here to make a full circle back to the beginning, a nice touch.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Yeah this is a really, really good album. I listened to it I think 12 times in a week, maybe more. My only real complaint is that I wish there were a few more songs as it is a slightly short 33min and I would love to hear more vocals. It's an album that is essential to have in your collection.
Side note: the press photos for this album are incredible. This photographer made some real art here!
